Eduardo R. del Rio was born in Havana, Cuba and grew up in San Juan, Puerto Rico. After high school he attended college in Texas where he earned a B.A. in Communications and an M.A. in English. After traveling around the Caribbean and working various jobs, including as a social worker and travel agent, he returned to Texas to study English Literature at Texas A&M University where he earned a Ph.D.
Dr. del Rio initially taught English at The University of Texas-Pan American and later at the University of Texas RGV in Brownsville, Texas where he served in various roles including Department Chair and Associate Dean. He retired as Full Professor in 2020 and is now Emeritus Professor at that institution. He’s received various grants and awards, including an NEH Fellowship, published numerous academic essays, and delivered talks in national and international venues.
Dr. del Rio has published poetry and short fiction in various journals, and is the author or editor of three books. He is the editor of The Prentice Hall Anthology of Latino Literature, author of One Island Many Voices: Interviews with Cuban-American Writers from The U of Arizona Press, and his most recent book is Cubarican, a collection of poems and stories published by Mouthfeel Press in 2023.
